SMSU places three at Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened up the 2012-13 season on Saturday at the 42nd Annual Bison Open at the Bison Sports Arena on the campus of North Dakota State University. SMSU had three wrestlers place at the open led by Micah Larson and Justin Reinsma, who both finished in third place in their respective weight classes.

SMSU didn’t have an athlete that competed in the 125 pound weight class.

Justin Reinsma would begin the tournament with a pin over Hunter Menendez (Mary) just 1:39 into the bout and a 8-5 decision over Javier Portillo (MSUM, unattached) in the quarterfinal match. Reinsma’s only loss of the day came in the semifinal bout as Justin Scherkenback (NDSU) won by a 3-0 decision. Reinsma would rebound with a 6-1 decision over Tyler Tischer (MSUM, unattached) in the consilation semifinals and would secure his third place finish with a 6-4 win over the University of Minnesota’s Randy Hanson.

Three SMSU wrestlers would compete in the 141 bracket, Devin Terry, Ethan Hildebrandt and Beau Buysse. Terry would beat both Brent Johnson (Itasca CC) and Cory Messer (MSUM) before falling to Nick Dardanes (Minnesota) in the quarterfinal due to injury. Terry was forced to forfeit against teammate Ethan Hildebrandt in the consolation round. Buysee went 1-2 on the day with his lone win coming via pin over Connor MacGregor in the first round. Hildebrandt went 3-2 on the day with decisions ove Brent Johnson (Itasca CC), Mario Tuccitto (MSUM) and an injury default win over teammate Devin Terry.

In the 149 pound bracket, Jake Slocum went 1-2 with the lone win coming from an 8-3 decision over Josh Shupe (Minnesota).

Cody Fritz picked up a 3-2 record on the day with a decision over Ben Cousins (Concordia), a pin over Victory Strasburg (Minot State) and an overtime win over Kevin Fynboh (Concordia).

Travis Longtin went 0-2 on the day as he wrestled for the Mustangs in the 165 pound bracket. Longtin was pinned by Josten Coleman (Concordia) and lost by decision to Jake Krogstad (Concordia).

Three Mustangs wrestled in the 174 pound bracket, Blaine Miller, William Dean and Andrew Rodas. Miller went 0-2, while Dean went 1-2 with the win coming over Nick Bachmann (Concordia). Rodas received a bye in his first match and went on to post a 1-2 record with the win coming by major decision over Devon Flores (Minot State).

At 184, Travis Peralta placed fourth after falling to Kody Sorenson (NDSU) in the third-place match. Peralta pinned Matthew Beehler (MSUM), defeated Christian Harrison (Concordia), and Shea Nolan (SDSU) by decisions to earn a spot in the third-place bout.

Micah Larson capped off his successful day with a pin over Delson Saintal (Concordia) in the 197 pound third-place match. Larson received a bye in the first round and followed with major decisions over Colt Castebury and Martin Hagen (unattached). Larson’s only hiccup came in the semifinal as Joel Bauman (Minnesota) defeated him by decision, 8-3.

Cole Wilson and Todd Klemz both wrestled for SMSU in the 285 pound bracket. Wilson went 0-2 with two losses coming by decision from Cody Kasprick (Concordia) and John Gusewelle (NDSU). Klemz went 1-2 on the day with a pin over Jacob Haydel (SDSU) in the second consilation round.

Southwest Minnesota State will compete at the Concordia Cobber Open on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 9 a.m.
