J Robinson’s 30-year reign as one of the nation’s best wrestling coaches is over, terminated Wednesday for “multiple acts of serious misconduct” regarding the use and sales of prescription drugs among his wrestlers.
“I have a great deal of respect for Coach Robinson and what he’s accomplished during his 30 years at the University of Minnesota,” athletics director Mark Coyle said. “That respect cannot excuse his conduct in this instance.”
After an investigation by the school’s Office of General Counsel, the U determined that Robinson, 70, failed to fully share his suspicions that several of his wrestlers were using and selling the prescription anti-anxiety drug Xanax, then obstructed school and university police investigations by disposing of drugs confiscated from wrestlers and refusing to answer what Coyle called “important questions.”

Specifically, the school contends that while Robinson informed the school of drug use suspicions by requesting testing of his athletes on March 10, he never shared everything he knew, even after a March 23 team meeting during which he offered offending student-athletes “amnesty” if they gave Robinson their leftover tablets so he could destroy them.
