Italy has notified the European Commission of its intention to change rules on the ingredients in popular seasonal cakes such as panettone and pandoro.
Although such products are not protected under EU law as geographical indications, member countries must still notify Brussels of any changes to domestic protections that could interfere with the internal market.

Rome plans to change the ingredients allowed in a class of cakes and cookies traditionally eaten around holidays including panettone, pandoro, colomba, savoiardo, amaretto and amaretto morbido.
Labeling changes are also on the books, so that gluten-free versions of the cakes can win official recognition.
