Klopp bemoans ‘dips’, hails Liverpool star who ‘makes things look easy’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists “the result is the most important thing” but admits they have “had a few dips defensively” and should “have scored more” as they dominated the first half of their 1-0 win over Tottenham.

Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of the game, as he took a superb first touch in the area before firing past Paulo Gazzaniga.

Liverpool had a number of other chances in the first half but failed to capitalise and allowed Tottenham to slowly grow into the game as Liverpool rode their luck.

Second half substitute Giovani Lo Celso missed the best chance for Spurs but the loanee somehow missed the target with the goal gaping, as Jose Mourinho fell to his knees.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “First and foremost the result is the most important thing. One team deserved to win and that was us. To win at Tottenham is pretty special. That the game wasn’t decided after 50-60 minutes was our fault.

“It was very intense for us. You can expect them to defend deep in this stadium, but it was 4-6-0 in the first half. If it was easy to win here, a lot more teams would do it.

“I’m over the moon about the result, but we have to talk about the performance. We should have scored more goals – that’s the truth. We have to be honest with ourselves. We could have scored more and we have to – especially in this stadium against a team like Tottenham.

“We were on the ground towards the end and they were coming forward. The spell we’ve had, it costs you rhythm. In the second half a couple of our players were slightly exhausted, but we fought through that.

“It was very hard-fought because we didn’t close the game down early. We should have been one or 2-0 up already when we scored. If you have quality opponent like Tottenham and you don’t close the game they will come back.

“Allison makes things look easy. It is not what we would have wanted. It is intense, you lose the ball and you are facing one of the best counter-attacking sides. We had Robbo (Andy Robertson) free two or three times and he didn’t find a team-mate, so we didn’t help ourselves.

“We needed Alisson for that today. We had a few dips defensively. Some games he has not a lot to do with winning the ball high early. It is good but there is no other chance to win games than to defend well.

On their record start to the season: “It doesn’t feel somehow special. We know about it and it is special but I can’t feel it. When someone gives you a trophy it is done but until then you need to fight. It is only the start. We need to continue because our contenders are so strong. Pep will not give up. I will do the same. So far, so really good.”
