Sky Sports presenter David Jones has issued an apology for having ‘spoiled what was such an important discussion on racism tonight’.
After Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham was marred by allegations of racist abuse towards defender Antonio Rudiger, Sky held a discussion with pundits Gary Neville, Ashley Cole and Graeme Souness.
Neville in particular spoke at great length – and so very bloody well – about the situation, with Cole and Souness adding salient points of their own.
But Jones has since apologised ‘unreservedly’ for distancing Sky Sports from Neville’s comments after the pundit suggested the racism storms surrounding the country’s two main political parties had not helped.
Jones said that he was simply trying to keep the debate balanced, but accepted he ‘didn’t make that point clear enough’ – likely because someone was shouting in his earpiece at the time.
‘I’m so sorry to have spoiled what was such an important discussion on racism tonight,’ he said.
‘I had to intervene when Gary suggested the two main political parties were to blame – I didn’t make that clear enough. For that I apologise unreservedly.
‘I would never purposefully shut down a discussion on racism. I’ve worked for Sky for over 20 years and know they share my view that racism of any kind should not be tolerated. That is not a debate. And that’s why I’m so very disappointed and sorry tonight.’
