Former Barca president Gaspart: Neymar to Real Madrid? He's not a coward like Figo!

The 73-year-old insists any switch to the Santiago Bernabeu would not put the Brazilian in the same category as a man who crossed the divide

Neymar may end up at Real Madrid, but former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart says the Brazilian will not be considered a traitor like Luis Figo.

Back in 2000, one of the most controversial transfers of all-time saw the Portugal international superstar trade Camp Nou for Santiago Bernabeu.

Figo was never forgiven for crossing the Clasico divide and remains “a coward” in the eyes of Gaspart – who took the reins in Catalunya as the Ballon d’Or winner headed for the exit door.

Neymar could tread a similar path at some stage in the future, having left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but any switch to Real will not cause as much bad blood between two old adversaries.

Gaspart told Marca on transfer talk surrounding the Brazilian: “Neymar’s possible move to Madrid is not comparable with Figo.

“Figo left with treachery and with no time to renew the team, and he was a coward who betrayed us.

“Neymar went for money, full stop.”

Gaspart filled a presidential post at Barcelona from July 2000 to February 2003, so is well placed to discuss the demands of the role.

He believes that Gerard Pique could move from the playing field to the boardroom at some stage in the future, with the defender having admitted that he would welcome the opportunity to guide the club forward.

“Pique could be president,” Gaspart said.

“I’ve known him since he was a kid and he’s showing that as a businessman he does very well.

“If Beckenbauer, Angel Maria Villar and Platini can do it… why not Pique?”
