U.S. striker Wood joins Hannover on season-long loan

The 25-year-old joins the Bundesliga side after a difficult season with Hamburg in which he scored just three goals in total

Hannover 96 has confirmed the arrival of American forward Bobby Wood from Hamburg on a season-long loan with a purchase option.

Wood endured a difficult 2017-18 with Hamburg, scoring just two league goals in 24 appearances as the club was relegated to the 2.Bundesliga.

But the 25-year-old will now continue in the German top flight, landing with Hannover after two seasons with HSV.

“I had very good conversations with the coach and I know what the club want to achieve, what kind of football they want to play and what my role can be,” Wood told Hannover’s official website.

“This is the perfect move for me. Hannover played some exciting football last season and I’m confident my style fits with how the team plays.”

Wood has been capped 39 times by the U.S. national team, scoring 12 goals.

Prior to his spell at Hamburg, Wood played for several teams in the German second division, scoring 17 goals with Union Berlin in the 2015-16 campaign.

“Bobby Wood has exactly the striker profile we’ve defined, a highly talented player who has already proven his potential, and is a great fit for us because of his extremely team-friendly playing style and his great willingness to run,” Hannover manager Horst Heldt said.

“He’s had a difficult time recently, but not long ago half the league was after him, so we’re very happy he made the transfer to us.”
