‘Pep’s City side not quite as good as Man Utd treble winners’

Sam Allardyce thinks Manchester United’s 1999 treble winners are still the best side the Premier League has ever seen despite Manchester City’s latest title triumph.

Pep Guardiola’s side have accumulated 198 points over the last two seasons, achieving the highest points total in Premier League history in 2017/18 before pipping Liverpool to the title this campaign.

However, Allardyce reckons Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side that won the treble in 1999 and secured three consecutive titles between 1998 and 2001 are still better than the current City side.

“I’m not so sure they beat Fergie yet,” Allardyce told talkSPORT.

“Fergie won the Premier League three times on the trot [he did this twice: 1998-2001 and 2006-2009] and won the treble.

“If you talk about the fact Man City are very close, I’d agree with that, but I don’t think they’re quite Manchester United.

“You forget how great they were in the past, how big the challenges were at the time and how good their players were.

“And I’m not so sure the lower end of the Premier League is quite as good as they used to be in the early 2000s. Personally, I think the teams were a lot stronger in the lower half of the Premier League than they are now.”
