I SAY AARON WAN-BISSAKA IT THE BRAND NEW ARSENAL STYLE
He doesn’t have quite the fashion chops of Hector Bellerin (who does?), but the big gossip this morning is that Arsenal could make a summer move for the best emerging star of the season, Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Their report gives “£40m or more” as the minimum amount the Gunners would need to bid to land the 21-year-old, which seems a little on the low side to us for a player who has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since making his debut a little over a year ago and is only likely to get better.
“Wan-Bissaka can tackle and also get forward — qualities Emery craves,” say The Sun in a rare show of understatement.
STICK HIM IN A JOELINTON TRAVEL TAVERN
Reports from Germany’s Sport1.de suggest that Newcastle United are going to utterly destroy their transfer record by bringing in Hoffenheim striker Joelinton for a fee of around €60m, which translates as a bit over £52m, or 1.3 Aaron Wan-Bissakas. See? Told you £40m was too low.
The 22-year-old Brazilian was signed as a direct long-term replacement for Roberto Firmino when he left for Liverpool in 2015, and has scored eight goals in 16 appearances for Hoffenheim this season, having spent the last couple of years on loan at Rapid Vienna.
That would be a bit of a shocker of a fee, though, given that Newcastle only signed their first £20m+ player earlier this year when purchasing Miguel Almiron, breaking a transfer record that had stood for 14 years.
WHERE DO BROKEN HARTS GO?
The MLS, Whitney, that’s where they go…at least according to the Sun, who report that Burnley goalkeeper Joe Hart is off to America after falling out of favour at Turf Moor.
Burnley have been utterly rejuvenated since Tom Heaton returned to the side on December 30th. Look, here’s some numbers for you to compare with your brain (Premier League only):
With Hart in goal: played 19, won 3, drawn 3, lost 13, conceded 41
With Heaton in goal: played 8, won 5, drawn 3, lost 0, conceded 7
It leaves the former shampoo mascot in a bit of a bind – but the MLS transfer window doesn’t shut until May, giving Hart a potential way out before the end of the season. No specific club has been mentioned…may we recommend Houston?
AND THE REST
Barcelona are ready to launch a big old bid of €110m for Atletico midfielder Saul Niguez…that would clear the way for Ivan Rakitic to leave, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich both ‘monitoring’ the Croatian, which sounds creepy as hell to us…Salomon Rondon would like to stay at Newcastle after his loan ends this summer…Everton want to sign PSG right-back Thomas Meunier…Juventus want Real Madrid left-back Marcelo…Mark Clattenburg is going to referee in China and honestly, referee gossip? What has this world come to?
