Souness launches staunch defence of United chief Woodward

Ed Woodward has done nothing wrong at Manchester United, according to former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness.

Jose Mourinho has been well backed in the transfer market since his arrival at the club with players such as Paul Pogba arriving for vast sums of money.

The summer transfer window was less inspiring with Fred, who has failed to settle in quickly at Old Trafford, their biggest buy of the transfer window.

£391 million has been spent since Mourinho arrived at the club with the club appearing more disjointed than ever, with a lot of reported off-field issues this campaign.

Reports have claimed that United are trying to employ a director of football as a middle man between Mourinho and Woodward – with the pair understood to butt heads on a lot of issues.

However, Souness does not think Woodward can accept any blame for United’s current poor league position and transfer business.

“Where’s the problems upstairs?” Souness told Virgin Media Sport.
